A flood tore away the bridge over river Múlakvísl river this morning (approx 8km east of Vík í Mýrdal, click here for location).  Current estimates are it will take 2 to 3 weeks to repair the damages and till then the national road number 1 is unusable at this location.  Mountain tracks, such as Fjallabaksleid nyrðri are open but those are only driveable by 4x4 Jeeps or bigger vehicles.

Dimmuborgir (lava formations) and Hverfjall crater, both located near lake Mývatn in North East Iceland, will be declared today a nature reserve by the minister of environment.  The official announcement will take place inside Dimmuborgir.

The Icelandic Road Administration expects the summer tracks known as Kjalvegur (overland track between glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull) and Fjallabaksleid nyrðr to be opened sometime around next week.  Check their web page here for up to date information in english.
